Master Benjamin R. Thompson, a distinguished V-Dan Black Belt and certified Master Instructor through the United States Kido Federation (USKF), has been a dedicated figure in the martial arts community for over 25 years. His extensive training spans multiple disciplines, including Chung Do Kwan TaeKwon-Do, Kung Fu, T’ai Chi Ch’uan, Iaido, Goshin-Ryu Karate, and Hapkido. This diverse background has shaped his teaching methodologies, benefiting students of all ages and skill levels.

Thompson’s journey began with the Kick Drugs Out of Alliance (KDOA) program, where he earned his black belt at the age of 16 and started teaching by 18. His commitment to the program lasted over two decades, volunteering as an instructor until the program’s conclusion in 2022. Beyond instruction, he has competed at both the state and national levels through the Professional Karate Commission, participating in prestigious tournaments such as the Disney Open Tournament, PKRA, and USKF series.

In 2019, Thompson established The Open Space Martial Arts in North Canton, Ohio, with the vision of creating a welcoming and structured environment for students of all backgrounds. The academy offers a range of programs designed to enhance physical fitness, discipline, and self-defense skills.

  • Kids’ TaeKwon-Do: Designed for children six and up, this program emphasizes discipline, physical activity, and community, helping young learners build confidence and skills in a supportive setting.
  • Self-Defense: Geared toward individuals aged 13 and older, these classes focus on practical techniques, attacker psychology, redirection, and de-escalation strategies.
  • Teen/Adult TaeKwon-Do: This program enhances strength, flexibility, balance, and endurance while also serving as a stress reliever and mental clarity booster.
  • T’ai Chi Ch’uan: Targeted at individuals aged 13 and above, this class promotes overall wellness through smooth, controlled movements that improve flexibility and relaxation.
  • Traditional Weapons: For those interested in martial arts weaponry, this program provides instruction in the use of various traditional weapons, blending history with practical application.
